What is Adbooks?
Adbooks is a group of people of all ages. Our purpose is to discuss books written for adolescents, or young adults (YA). We maintain a mailing list and a website. Our members include teachers, parents, librarians, students, writers, and others. In addition to informally swapping recommendations and discussing topics related to books, reading, and teaching, we read and discuss selected books together, and sponsor an annual book award, the JHunt. Our atmosphere is warm, supportive, inclusive, and stimulating. We welcome new members of all ages and backgrounds. (top)

How does a mailing list work?
A mailing list such as Adbooks is an automated program that allows email messages to be sent to many members at once. If you post a message to the Adbooks email address, a copy of your message will be sent to all members of the list at their individual e-mail addresses. Our list has a moderate amount of traffic, averaging about ten messages each day. (top)

How do I subscribe to Adbooks?
There are two ways to subscribe to Adbooks:
Via web: Visit the subscribe page at YahooGroups.com. If you have never used YahooGroups, you will need to register your e-mail address.
Via e-mail: Send a blank e-mail to adbooks-subscribe@yahoogroups.com. You will need to reply to a confirmation message in order to be subscribed. (top)

What are the options for subscribers?
There are three options:
Regular: You receive a copy of every message that is sent to the list.
Digest: The digest mode compiles all the messages sent that day and sends them in one long, daily message. Some members find that this method helps save time spent reading and retrieving messages.
No Mail: The no mail option allows you to read and post messages through the YahooGroups website, but will prevent messages from being sent to your email account. This is a smart choice if you do not have daily access to your email account.
You can switch between options at any time by visiting YahooGroups. (top)

How do I fix problems sending or receiving mail from the group?
Visit YahooGroups and click on the "Help" link near the top of the page. (top)

Are old Adbooks messages stored anywhere?
Yes. Adbooks messages are archived here. There is a search feature which will allow you to find messages related to a particular topic. Archives are only available to registered members of Adbooks. (top)

What is appropriate to post to the list?
We welcome any messages about books for adolescent readers and related issues, including but not limited to reading, teaching, and learning. Adbooks members tend to branch off from original topics and discuss all sorts of things. These discussions can be passionate, funny, informative, and thought-provoking. This kind of meandering is encouraged - it is exactly what good books should make people do.
Please do not post advertisements or promotional material to the list. They do not fit the focus of our group. We have a special list for posting and receiving promotional material such as press releases, book giveaways, and author tour information. That group is located here.
Please keep the tone of your messages civil and respectful. Refrain from insulting or attacking other list members or their ideas.
Members who violate these policies will risk having their list membership modified or revoked. (top)

How should I reply to a post?
In consideration to people on the digest form who are wading through a lot of messages, please avoid quoting a long string of messages in your reply. Just copy enough so that your reply will be understood. Use quotation marks or > signs to distinguish the original post from your reply. (top)

Is lurking allowed?
Yes, you are welcome to belong to the list even if you do not participate by sending messages yourself. But be aware that you are depriving list members of the unique insights you can add. Participating in a list can be a tremendously enriching experience. Shy? Start off by introducing yourself - tell about who you are and what you like to read. Then from time to time, post a message when you have an opinion about a topic being discussed, or you've just read a great book and want to tell everyone, or you have a burning question that maybe someone on the list can answer. The more you post, the easier it becomes! (top)

I have written/published a book. Can I promote it on Adbooks?
Our list is non-commercial in nature, focusing on the discussion of books, not the promotion of specific titles. Please contact the list moderator directly with information about books that might be of interest to the group. The moderator will forward that information to Adbooks-reviews, our sister list created to share author information. Click here to visit the Adbooks-reviews site.(top)

How are the monthly selections chosen?
Periodically, group members are asked for nominations for the next group selections. We encourage a wide range of nominations: non-fiction, historical fiction, fantasy, classics, realistic fiction... We ask that the books you nominate be in print and generally available at bookstores and libraries to make access for all group members easier. Group members will vote on nominated titles and arrange a reading schedule, usually selecting one or two books each month. (top)

Is it ok to skip reading some books of the month?
Yes, absolutely. You are not required to read any of the selections or participate in any of the discussions. There are no tests, papers, or grades. Some group members read every selection, while some read none of the selections. Choose a reading schedule that suits your own lifestyle! (top)

What does the Adbooks website have to offer?
The Adbooks website includes information about the Adbooks reading schedule, award-winning books, links to author pages, and YA book resources. The site is updated frequently -- check the news page for the newest additions. (top)

How can I get my young adult book link posted on the Adbooks website?
If you would like your link posted on the Adbooks website, please contact the list moderator. Please include link address, site description, and e-mail contact information. (top)

I have a question that wasn't on the list. Who can help?
Please direct additional questions to the listmoderator. (top)
